Q: Do you get much time in Munich to explore?
A:This depends on what time of year it is and if you are only there for 1 or 2 nights. For 1 night, you arrive in the afternoon, get a few hours in the city center and head to accommodation, you go to a beer hall at night and then back to accommodation. That is it. If you are there for 2 nights, then the day may be free but depends on the optionals planned.

Q: Do contiki tours go to a beer hall in Munich?
A: Yes contiki goes to a beer hall for either an included dinner or optional dinner depending on the tour. The beer hall is usually not one of the more well known ones, but outside the city. Still it is a nice place and has good beer and food. If it is festival time, then they go to the more well known ones or beer tents.


Q: In Munich what are some things to do?
A: There is lots to do in the city of Munich. You can do walking tours, walk around the English gardens, go to some of the museums, go to the residence. There is also the food markets and many beer halls.


Q: Does contiki visit concentration camps in or around munich?
A: Depending on the tour will determine the concentration camp that you visit. Most visit mauthausen. There is a visit of about 90 mins to 2hrs to see the camp and experience the history.

Q: When visiting a beer hall in Munich, should you dress up in traditional costume?
A: You can dress up in traditional costume if you want, if you have the outfit or if you have the time to buy one. Not many tourists do except in September. Some locals do so.

Q: In Munich is the glockenspiel worth seeing?
A: The Glockenspiel is interesting. Go see it if you have plenty of time, but if your time short, there are other things to see in the city. All the tourists go to see it, so the square will be very crowded.

Q: In Munich, how easy is it to get into the beer halls?
A: Depending of the hall and the time of the year it can range from easy to impossible. There will be lots of people and you may have to stand. However if you can get into one it will be worth it.

Q: In Munich is it easy to hire a bike and is it worth it?
A: Most hotels or hostels will be able to help you hire or tell you about a place to hire bikes. Then you can hit the street and parks to explore on two wheels. Is it worth it? Yes, you do get to see more of the city this way.

Q: What types of walking tours are there in Munich?
A: There are general walking tours, tours that focus on the third reich, ot medieval, the parks or beer halls and beer. There are plenty to choose from.

Q: In Munich, where do most walking tours meet from?
A: Most tours meet in the central square – town hall square, marieplatz near the clock. Or at the station.

Contiki FAQ Mykonos

Q: How long does it take to get from Athens to Mykonos on a ferry
A: The ferry ride is about 5 hrs, you have to leave at 7.30am. It also depends on local conditions as well.

Q: What is the outline for what contiki does on Mykonos?
You leave Athens in the early morning, catch the ferry to Mykonos. It is a 5 hr ferry ride, then you arrive at the port. You get a transfer to the hotel that contiki uses and then it is free time for the next few hours. Most people hang by the pool, go to the beach or the taverna down the street. Later that night there is the 1st optional – the in town tour, dinner and pub crawl. This is a lift to the town, a walking tour of the main town, including windmills, then an optional dinner at a local restaurant. After dinner you walk to the first bar, have a few drinks, later you move onto the next and next. There is a pick up about 2.15am and you head back to the hotel.
Next day you can sleep in, relax and there is noting until about 2pm when there is the paradise beach optional. This involves a transfer to the beach and then chilling on the beach for a few hours while the party builds up. Later a transfer back to the hotel
The last day, is yours free, you may catch the bus into town or chill by the beach. There is an included dinner that night and people take it easy at the bar. Sometimes there is also a toga party.


Q: In Mykonos how long does it take to get from the contiki hotel to the main town?
A: By hotel shuttle it is about 25 minutes, by regular bus it is about 35 minutes. However there are great views along the way.

Q: In Mykonos how long does it take to get from the contiki hotel to Paradise beach?
A: It usually takes about 30 – 40 minutes by hotel shuttle bus, of course depends on traffic.

Q: In Mykonos, what sort of events happen at paradise beach?
At the main beach itself, there is usually a host – the elephant man, plus dancers. However next door is the club area that usually has various famous dj's that turn up and play. There is also theme nights here as well.

Q: What are some other things to do on Mykonos?
A: Explore the town. Hire a car and hit the beaches or explore the middle of the island.

Q: In Mykonos, where are the closest watersports to the contiki hotel?
A: The beach in front of the hotel has watersports on offer at good prices.

Contiki FAQ general Italy

Q: Where is the best gelato?
A: All gelato places are good, especially in Italy. Just avoid gelato places that have bright gelato colours, these places are for the tourists, usually more expensive, and are not as good. Plus they also have artificial flavors in them.

Q: How long do you get to stay in Pisa?
A: You don't stay long in Pisa. You park and walk the 15 minute walk from the coach parking to the leaning tower area, you then may get 30 – 45 minutes to take pictures and have a look at the markets and then it is time to meet up again. There is no time to climb up the tower.


Q:What are Italian pizza's like and where are the best ones?
A: Italian pizzas are very simple and very tasty. You can't go wrong here. They are usually bread, cheese and some meat or mushroom and tomato. Very simple and tasty. The best ones are usually in road side stops – service centres.

Q: What are Italian road side stops like?
A: Driving through Italy, you stop at various points at service centers. These are big places that are lik shop/ restaurant/ rest area. They have good food, but the way to get the food is different. You need to select the food, pay for it, then pick it up. Easy? No, there may be three counters and the place is packed, so it is a challenge. Overall they are fun places to be in.


Q: Where can i get a good coffee in Italy?
A: In Italy any cafe has good coffee, just be sure to order the right type at the right time of day. Have an espresso standing at the bar and it will be very cheap. Do as the locals do.

Q: In Italy, can you drink the tap water?
A: In Rome, the water comming out of the tap tastes good and it is free. However as you get further south of Rome, it is recommended that you don't drink it. Bottled water is cheap.


Q: What should i be looking for when buying gelato in Italy.
A: Find a place that does not have all bright gelato colors, this means that it is real, if there is only a small amount, it means that it is made on site and would be fresh. Then just go for it. Try as many flavors as possible.


Q: In Pompeii, how long does the contiki tour of the site go for?
A: The tour here is about 90 minutes, but you get to see a lot of things.

Q: In Pompeii, if i don't want to tour the ruins, what other things can i do?
A: You should do the ruins even if you have been there before. However there are market stalls and gelato and good views, so sit back and relax.


Q: How long does it take to get from Pompeii to Sorrento?
A: It is about 90 minutes in a coach with stops for pictures.

Q: In Sorrento, how long does it take to walk from the hotel that contiki stays in to the centre of town?
A: It is about a 20 minute walk with great ocean views.


Q: Does the island of capri have good gelato?
A: There are a few gelato shops on the island, all are good, cheap as well.

Q: In Capri, what is the best way to go to the top town and then back to the ferry area?
A: The best way is to catch the cable car up to the top and then walk back down the hill. You get to see the island that way.

Q: How long does it take to get from Sorrento to Bari?
A: It is about a 5 – 6 hr drive with stops included.

Contiki FAQ Florence

Q: My free day in Florence is on a Monday, is there anything open?
A:The main museums of Florence are closed on this day, but the churches are open, so are the bell towers, you can walk around the city, eat, shop at the markets and explore. There is lots to do and you will run out of time to explore anyway.

Q: What is the leather demo in Florence like?
A: This is relatively boring. They show you how they make some of their boxes, then show you some jewelery, you are then free to have a look in the gift shop, where you get a discount. Go on the demo, look around and then get any leather products from here, but otherwise get from the market if you have time.

Q: What is the campsite area like in Florence?
A: The campsite is all one big hill. Lots of stairs. It has a shop, wifi that may work and a shop that sells beer. It is a good place. It also has a pool and laundry facilities.

Q: What is the space electronic disco in Florence with contiki like?
A: This is a big club area, contiki does this as an optional. The place is always packed but with young Italians. The music is good and so is the drink prices. The way you pay for drinks is different here, you get a card and show it to the the bar guys with each drink, when the card is used up, you then have to pay it and get a new one. Go here for a few hours even if you don't like clubs, just to say that you have been here. Also there are a number of different areas playing music.


Q: What is the Florence walking tour like with Contiki?
A: This is done as either an optional or part of the included things. You will have a local guide join up and show you around the city. You get to see the main square, walk across the main bridge, see the historic and medieval sites and you will end up in the doumo area. There will be plenty of time to take pictures, rest and explore. The guide will also tell you about the history of interesting things. Later when the tour is over, as the guide for the best way to get to what ever you want to see or perhaps a good place to eat.


Q: On a tour that only spends 1 night in Florence, what happens?
A: On the afternoon that you arrive in town you head to your accommodation, then relax a bit, have dinner. After dinner your tour manager might walk you to some night life – red garter bar. Next morning you may do a walking tour of the city, have a bit of free time, attend a leather demo and then leave the city. There is not much free time for a 1 nighter.

Q: How should i get around Florence?
A: It is easy to just walk around, it is the best way to see everything. Taxis are good to get back to your accommodations.

Q: In Florence, what is the red garter bar like?
A: The bar is a karaoke bar and also club. The karaoke part has two levels with lots of tables. Drinks are cheap and can be bought by the litre or half litre – including cocktails. It is just a fun experience. Plus it also has an atmosphere, however there are lots of Australian or USA people there as well, not many locals.

Q: How long does it take to get from Pisa to Florence by coach?
It takes about 90 mins to 2hrs depending on traffic.

It is about a 20 – 25 min coach ride or 20 min taxi ride.

Contiki FAQ amsterdam

Q: What happens when you stay longer in Amsterdam instead of busing it back to London?
A:You get left at the hostel or hotel that the group was staying at. It is up to you to organize a room if you need one. A lot of people do this.


Q: What is the secret optional in Amsterdam?
A: You may have heard that there is a secret optional in Amsterdam, this is true. The tour manager will tell you about it comming into the city. What it is, is a show – a live sex show. However it is nothing special as the actors as just doing their job, there is no passion. What is good about the show is that 2 free drinks are included. Also a number of people from the audience are voluntered to go on stage.

Q: Are the streets safe in the red light district of Amsterdam?
A: Yes they are safe, there are tourists around and police. However still keep an eye out.

Q: How long does it take to travel from Germany to Amsterdam with contiki?
A: Depending on where in Germany, but up to 5 – 6 hours of coach travel.

Q: What are some good clubs to go to in Ibiza?
A: Pacha, Amnesia, Privilege and Space.

Q: How long does it take to get to Barcelona on a coach with contiki?
A: Most tours leave from the french chateau and go to Barcelona. The drive is one of the longest of any tour. It is up to 11 hrs on the road. You do stop at service stops and pont du gard. However it is a long day and you are up early to leave. It could be longer if there is lots of traffic.

Q: Where do you stay in Barcelona? Is it far out of the city?
A: The place that you stay on concept in Barcelona is a hostel out near the airport, it is easy to get to by taxi, but it is far out of the city. It is a nice place but the area is a bit dodgy. Another place is a camp ground, also a bit far out of the city. They are both easy to get to by taxi.


Q: On a circle tour of europe with contiki, what time do you arrive in Barcelona?
A: Either direction, it is a long day of travel, so sometime between 7pm and 8pm.

Q: On a tour that goes to barcelona, what time does the morning city tour start?
A: You party until late the previous day, so the tour would start about 9 – 9.30am, giving time for breakfast before hand.

Q: In Barcelona, what are some things that i must see?
A: There is all the Gaudi things – the church, park and his houses, there is the picasso museum, chocolate museum, try tapas, party, head to the beach or do the hop on hop off bus.

Q: In Barcelona with contiki, when is a good time to do laundry?
A: Depends on the contiki tour and what optionals and inclusions are planned. It also depends on where you are staying. Therefore the best time to do it would be when you first arrive, if there is facilities available.

Contiki FAQ general greece.

Q: Are there any good tips on traveling around Greece? Day trips? Accommodation? Sailing trips?
A: Coniki does trips to Mykonos, Santorini, ios, corfu, paros and does a cruise tour that goes to a few other islands. Busabout and Topdeck also go out to various islands. There are also sailing tours that you can do as well as just hop on a ferry and head out. It is easy to get around and there are some good hotels and hostels on the islands.
Ios- town is kinda dead in the day but there's good water sports at the beach and the far out beach club parties.
Santorini- ride a donkey, volcano & hot springs day trip is really good



Q: What are Greek ferries like?
A: They are very big. There are also lots of people that ride them. They do have wifi, but it is not that fast and you have to pay for it. There is a cafe and restaurants on board, there is plenty of space to relax. Some of them have bars on board as well. 


Q: In Greece how easy is it to get ferry tickets?
A: You can get you ferry tickets online, there are a few sites out there. Some will also post your tickets to you. You can also pick up your tickets at the port as well. You can also get tickets on the day or the day before. Therefore very easy.

Q: In the Greek islands, is it easy to hire a car/ quad bike and is it worth it?
A: On most islands, it is very easy to hire a car, quad bike or buggy, all you do is show your licence, given them some money and get in the vechile to head to the petrol station to get some fuel. On some islands, it is a bit dangerous driving on the roads, but most of the time it is safe. You get to see more of the island then you otherwise would.

Q: Is Greece cheap or cheaper then the rest of Europe?
A: Greece can be cheap depending on where you go and what you do. Athens is cheap in terms of drinking and eating. Santorini is very expensive. Drinking on Ios can be ok, but you will go overboard and drink more because it is fun. Overall it is cheap or at least cheaper then Paris and parts of Italy. No matter what you can still have a good time.

Q: In Greece, can you drink the tap water?
A: In Greece it is recommended that you don't. Bottled water is cheap.

Q: What is a fish foot spa like in Greece and where can i get one?
A: These are small shops where you put your feet in containers of water and little fish eat the dead skin of your feet. This is an interesting experience and does not take long to do. It is also cheap and fun. You can do them in Athens, santorini, ios or any other island with a big enough tourist population.

Q: What are some other good Greek islands to visit?
A: Naxos, Paros, corfu, rhodes, crete, there are many, just hop on a ferry and go there.


Q: On the Greek islands, do the locals speak English?
A: Depends on the island. If it is a touristy island, then yes, if the island is out of the way, then not so much. However usually there will be someone to help you. It is a good time to learn Greek.
 
Q: What is a Gyros in Greece?
A: A Gyros is a kebab with chips inside it. They are all over Greece and the meats are very tasty. They are mostly chicken or pork, but you can get lamb and beef ones. They are also cheap.


Q: How do you get to some of the other greek islands?
A: Either plane from Athens or find the right ferry, just google the routes.

Q: To get to other greek islands, how do i get the tickets for the ferries?
A: You can either get them from the ferry docks or you can get them online and have them posted out or pick them up at the docks.


Q: How easy is it to hire a car or quad bike in Paros, greece?
A: It is very easy, just turn up at a hire place, how a licence if they ask, pay money and get your wheels. You do need to fill up the car on the way out of the town.

Q: What is the old town of Paros like?
A: The old town has a venetian castle/ fort. Has a number of shops, restaurants, bars etc. It is also maze like and fun to walk around.

Q: Does Paros have cool bars like other Greek islands?
A: The bars are generally small, but fun. There are some interesting places with interesting drinks. Go have a look around.

Q: Is Naxos main town maze like?
A: The town is on a hill, only at the Hill itself is it maze like, dating back to a fortress/ castle here. It is fun to walk around and explore.

Q: Is it easy to hire a car in Naxos?
A: Yes, as with most of the other Greek islands, all you need is money and your home drivers license.

Q: How easy is it to get around naxos.
A: It is easy to walk around the city, however it you want to go further, then you need to hire a car, catch a bus or do a tour. It is easy to walk around the town to get to the beaches.

Contiki FAQ Switzerland

Q: Is there snow in Switzerland, during July?
A: Jungfrau in laurerbrunnen has snow at the top and there are rides up there. Snow is mainly found on the high mountains.

Q: What is the contiki Switzerland campsite like?
A: This is a big campsite, there is the main contiki building that houses the rooms, showers, dining area and the bar. There is a path across the river that heads to the rest of the camp and there are some cabins here for overflow as well as for the general public. Here there is also a shop and wifi zone. You have to walk through the rest of the camp to head into town. The main contiki lodge is comfortable, but nothing really special.

Q: What does Contiki do in Lucerne when it is not staying in the city?
A: Lucerne, switzerland is a beautiful place. Some contiki tours actually stay here while others do not. The ones that do not, may still visit the place, but only stay for a few hours. In that few hours you may get a walking tour, see the bridge, the lion monument and get walked to a place to buy knives and other swiss things. There are also chocolate places near by as well. Any free time left, go and explore.


Q: When im in Switzerland, where is the best place to buy a Swiss army knife?
A: In Lucerne, contiki will take you to a few places that they know are good to buy knives, but you can get good ones at good prices in the main street of Luternbrunnen, at the campsite area. Really they are sold everywhere.


Q: In Switzerland, can you do skydiving as an optional with contiki?
A: No, you can't. You can do it separately – find the location and go there yourself. However it is an optional with Top deck.


Q: In switzerland, how long does it take to walk from the Campsite to the train station?
A: It is a good 20 minute walk, first through the country side and then into the village.

Q: How long does contiki visit liechtenstein?
A: Usually a visit is about 90 minutes or less, enough time to grab lunch and have a quick walk around.

Q: In Switzerland, can i use Euros?
A: Switzerland uses the swiss franc. Some places my use euros, but you will get a better deal with the local currency. You can get it easily out of ATMs.

Q: In the Swiss alps, how far is the campsites from the centre of town?
A: Depending on the way you walk, it is up to 10 minutes to get there.

Contiki FAQ France and Monaco.

Q: Do I have to dress up for the Monte Carlo Casino?
A: This is your time to get all fancy, wear your nicest dress and shoes, or suit and tie. Don't forget that it will be hot and you will have to walk up stairs to get from the bus parking to the casino area.

Q: What are the beaches like in the french riveria?
A:The beaches are not sand, they are small to large stones. The water is very nice. In Nice the beach is below the main street, easy to get to. You can also purchase time at umbrellas and get food delivered.

Q: What is there to do at the french chateau?
There is an organized picnic up a hill done on the free day. There are also a few bars, a pool and some board games. It is a chance to relax and chat. WiFi is not that good.


Q: How long does it take to get from Paris to the wine region of france on a coach with contiki?
A: Including rest stops, it could take 7 – 8 hrs.

Q: With contiki in the wine region, what is the picnic and walk like?
A: The picnic is basic picnic food that you have to carry, bring a small backpack, the food is ok, but you should get snacks the day before. As for the walk, it is through the local area and is all up hill on a track. It is worth the walk for the views.

Q: With contiki at the wine region, what is the cave like at the chateau?
A: The cave is the bar in the basement of the building. It is where everyone goes to party. It has cheap drinks and good times.

Q: With contiki at the wine region, that is the chateau pool like?
A: The pool is located a the back of the chateau. It is large and inviting if it is hot day. There is lots of grass around the edges to sunbake as well.

Q: With contiki in the wine region, what are some other things to do during your time here?
A: There is not much to do besides rest and relax. You could swim, walk, read, drink and talk.


Q: At the riveria/antibes contiki campsite location, how do you get to the beach?
A: At the Antibes campsite, where contiki stays in the french riveria, there is a beach nearby, but it is a bit of a walk to get there. You need to leave the camp and head onto the main road and turn right. Keep walking until the end of the road, the beach is here. It takes about a 15 minute walk to get there.


Q: In the french Rivera, what is the Perfumery tour like?
A: Most tours go to a perfumery between Nice and Monaco, with great views of the ocean on some cliffs. You get a tour of the building and a description on what they do there. Then the tour ends in the shop and you have a change to buy some good scents at good prices. Have a look around the shop, you may find something that you like. You stay here about 45 minutes.


Q: What else is there to do in Monaco.
A: In Monaco you can just wander around the streets and see where the money is. There is the palace, the aquarium casinos and the waterfront. There is also very high end shopping.


Q: In Nice in France is there any good gelato shops here?
A: Yes there are a few, but there is one close to the edge of the old town as you head up the promanade towards the castle hill area. Plenty of Flavors and tasty.

Q: In Monaco, is everything expensive?
A: It is more expensive then France or Italy, but it also depends on where you go. Getting a drink at the casinos is expensive but at a restaurant it is ok. It is all relative.

Q: In Monaco are there any cheap places to get a drink?
A: Cheap is relative. The best bet is to bring your own or head away from the casinos and find a bar or a restaurant.

Q: What is the old town of nice like?
A: There are lots of shops and restaurants in a maze like area. It is easy to get lost. But it is also cool to just wander around and explore..

Q: When you get off at Russell Square Tube Station do you turn left towards RN?
A: Yes. There's maps on little stands all along the streets in London anyway and the ones in Russell Square have the RN on them . Russell square tube has a lift to the street level, take the lift as there are 150 stairs or something like that

Q: How hard is it to do organized day trips from London and what are some good tours.
A: Day trips from London that are organized are very good and very organized. There are many companies and they are all good. A few meet from the Victoria coach station. They do tours to Windsor, bath, Stonehenge, Stafford and Warner brothers studios as well as further a field. They are worth doing if you have the time and want to see more of Britain.

Q: Im traveling in London before and after my tour, should i books things like madame Tussaud, London eye or London pass before i come.
A: These things can be booked early, you might get a discount. Book online while you are at home, turn up on the day and pick them up. It is easy, you avoid lines and it is cheaper.

Q: Is the London hop on hop off bus worth it?
A: If you want to see the city in an open top bus it is, but it is a 2 hr loop that takes 3hrs in a morning due to the traffic. There is also the London weather to watch out for. Do a loop in the bus, then go about using the tube and other buses and you will see more of London.

Q: How long should i stay in London before and after my trip?
A: In London there is lots to do and see. If you have the time stay for a week before the tour, see the sights and take day trips, then once you trip is over stay a few more days before moving on. You should also find other accommodation as well. If you have been to London before, stay 3 or 4 days before your tour, just to explore.

Q: What are some of the things i should see and do in London?
A: This depends on what you like, but there is shopping such as regents and oxford streets, harrods. Parks such as Hyde, kensington and green. There are some cool museums – British, V&A, Churchill war rooms, natural history, science, imperial war museum, guards museum. Churches – st pauls, Westminster and temple churches or abbeys. Then there is Piccadilly circus, Trafalgar square, parliament, Buckingham palace, big ben, London eye, madame Tussaud, the zoo, the list goes on and on. Have a look at a map of London and then choose a few things to focus on.

Q: Are there any good pub crawls in London?
A: London has lots of pub crawls, a lot of them leave from the Piccadilly circus, covent garden area. They cover a lot of bars in this area. All include a free drink each bar and some drink specials. Europe free walking tours also do a pub crawl in London. Most run every night and can be fun. In London, they tend to head to the last club/ bar about 11 – 11.30, giving time for those that are not into clubs time to get onto the tube before it closes.

Q: Is doing a walking tour in London worth it?
A: Like most places, London has lots of walking tours, there are also themed ones as well. A first timer to London would enjoy the sandeman ones, that cover a general area. There are also royal ones, roman ones, ww2, musical, pub crawls and the like. There is something to suit everyone and is a chance to explore in depth an area of interest.

Q: In London how do you get to Hampton court?
A: This is very easy to do and doesn't take long to get there. Also there is lots to do once you are there. First start by heading to Waterloo station, from the tube section of the station, head to the above ground trains and find the train going to Hampton court – this is the last stop. Use your oyster card to get a ticket, get on the train. A short time later you at Hampton court station. Get off and follow the signs to the palace. Also follow the crowds.

Q: In London is it hard to visit the palaces?
A: Most of the palaces are very easy to visit, most are on the London pass such as Hampton court, kensington and Windsor. Buckingham palace is a bit difficult, it can be visited but only at certain times of the year and you need to book online. It it worth it? Depends on what you like.

Q: In London, What can i do when visiting buckingham palace?
A: Buckingham palace is easy to get to and there are a few things you can do. If it is the right time of year you can do a tour of the palace, you can watch the changing of the guard at the palace. There is also the queen Victoria statue and st James park to wander around. Just walking up to the palace and taking a few pictures is still worthwhile for those that are time poor

Q: What are the parks like in London?
A: There are a number of parks in London, a lot of them large, but fun to walk or bike around in. The ones that are very close together are Kensington gardens, Hyde park, green park and st James park. There is also regent park, home of the Zoo and Greenwich park, home of the observatory. It is a nice place to walk around on a sunny morning. There are also lots of people walking dogs or generally walking at most times of the day.

Q: Are the markets in London worthwhile going to visit?

A: The royal national hotel in London, has the contiki basement, you can leave things here. It will cost on a per day or a per week basis. Other suggestions are to hire lockers in stations.

A: This is either a 3 or 5 day tour. It is similar to the new York uncovered, in that there is no real tour, just a contiki rep at the contiki basement. There is the option to do some day trips, with other companies and a chance to use the tube. It is a chance to see London, with most of it organized for you. However you are better off doing this by yourself as you could save money this way and still see more.


Q: In New York and London, should i go an see a musical – how?
A: Both these cities have some great musicals and shows. Take a night and go see one. They are all over the city and many types to suit all tastes. You can get tickets online or at the various cheap ticket booths around the city – usually at times square on around Trafalgar square.

A: The pub inside the royal national hotel is very good – good place to to hang out and also get some good food. There are some pubs across the road and in the nearby shopping center.

A: There are plenty of walking tours, general London, the city, royal London, roman London, medieval London, London parks, bike tours, ww2, ghost tours, market tours, etc, etc, there is something for everyone.

A: In London you could make a day of seeing everything to do with royalty, second world war, Romans, parks, Victorian, history, harry potter, and many other ideas.

Contiki FAQ Paris

Q: Disneyland Paris... Can you buy your tickets online beforehand?
A: There apparently isn't much of a difference either way, but the Disneyland website occasionally offers decent specials. You can also get them from a travel agent or just buy them on the day, no problems.

Q: What are some good things to see in or outside of Paris?
A: Disneyland, Eiffel tower, Louvre, Rodin museum, Notre dame, shop, Versailles, Luxembourg gardens. There are plenty of museums as well as shopping and eating. You can also look up some pretty cool walking tracks along the Seine to do. You should go up to Montmartre and visit Sacre Coeur.

Q: How long does it take to get from London to Paris by coach?
A: You leave London between 6am and 7am, with luck you should be over in Calais by 10 – 11am. By the time you get to Paris and get to Accommodation it should be around 5pm, depending on traffic. There is also the hour lost as you cross the channel.

Q: What happens on the free day in Paris?
A: You have the day free in Paris. After breakfast you can get the coach into the city and it will drop you off at a certain point and pick you up later that day from there. You then have the whole day to explore. Later if you want you can meet the group at the coach and depending on time, the coach will head back to the accommodation so you can get ready for the night, otherwise you can change on the coach and then take it to the optional dinner followed by the caberate, then usually you go to a bar before catching a taxi back. It is a busy day, but fun

Q: Is the paris pass worth it.
A: If you are going to be in Paris 2 nights, therefore 1 full day, it is not worth it, but if you have 3 nights here or go back by yourself, then purchase it, you may get some use out of it. It also depends on what you want to see.

Q: Moulin Rouge, worth the money ?
A: Most people would say yes. Contiki also offers another cheaper one with concept tours, that is good as well. You get comedy boobs, dancing, magic and boobs and champagne.

Q: At Dover, heading to Calais, what happens ?
A: This is when you first start your tour, you drive down from London, the tour manager picks up tickets for the ferry, you may wait around a bit, then you may have to go through the border and get your passport stamped. From here you then board the ferry.

Q: Where is the secret entrance to the Louvre?
A: It is not really a secret entrance, just an entrance that not many people use. The main entrance is under the pyramid, but head to the river side of the building, walk down the street a bit. You will soon come across some lion statues, there is an entrance here. However it is not always manned and therefore may be closed. But if you can get in, it is a way to skip the pyramid area.


Q: In Paris, where is the famous bridge of locks?
A: First of all, what is it? This is just a bridge that has thousands of locks that symbolize peoples love for each other. It used to be that this was the only place, but now it is spread to other bridges around the world. However if you still want to see it, it is just down the road from the Lourve, heading to Notre dame. You can't miss it.

Q: Is it possible to stay in Paris after the Contiki tour finishes?
A: Some tours start in Amsterdam and finish in Paris. From Paris the tour is done, the only thing left is to head back to London, however if you want to stay in Paris, that is fine, you just need to let your tour manager know and organize accommodation.


Q: In Paris, does contiki visit Versailles?
A: Depending on the tour, but yes. If you are on a tour that is 3 nights in the city, one of the days is spent going to see the palace. But you can get to it by train from the city centre with no problem.

Q: What are some must sees to do in Paris.
A: You must see the Lourve, the eiffel tower, some of the parks and gardens. You should get a crepe and have some snails. You should also wander some and then sit at a cafe. Paris also has some great museums, so see them.

Q: On a tour in Europe, what time do you leave Paris the day of leaving day?
A: It depends on the tour and where you are going next, but usually around 7.30 – 7.45am.


Q: Should i get the Paris pass if im doing a tour that goes through Paris?
A: Generally a tour will be here 2 nights, but by the time you get here, you have one day, so it is not worth getting it for one day, if you are here for at least 3 days then you should get it, for doing a tour, you won't have a enough time to make it worth your while.

Q: What is Paris weather like in summer?
A: It is generally warm, with a bit of cloud. But usually nice days, nice nights.

Q: What is a good thing to do in Paris at lunch time?
A: Even though you don't have much time, do what the locals do. Find a cafe, order food and people watch. Or go to a deli, grab some food and have a picnic in a park.

Q: In Paris when is the best time to go up the Eiffel tower?
A: The best time, to get the best views and least crowds is between 4pm and 6pm in the summer time. This is before it gets dark but after the morning rush. You still get the good views. The best way to go up is to walk up the stairs to the second level.

Contiki FAQ the optionals

Questions about the various optionals.

Q: What optionals should I do?
A: Every tour offers different optionals.

There are dinner optionals, adventure optionals, tour optionals, event optionals and various purchase optionals. Go through the list and work out what you want to do, then read about them, hear what the tour manager has to say. Do the dinner optionals, yes they may be expensive but you get lots for the price and brings the group closer together.

Q: Do you pick and pay for your optionals at the start?
A: Depending on the tour and tour manager sometimes the optionals could be picked and paid for at the start of the tour, othertimes the tour manager passes around a sign up sheet and you pick the optionals that way. As for paying for them – again depends on the tour manager, but could be at the start, the middle or towards the end.

Q: What happens if i don't want to do an optional?
A: In most cases, you will not have to meet up and do the optional, so you would get a lot of free time. However sometimes the optionals are done on the way to somewhere else, so you would wait at the bus or at the site until the optional is over.

Q: What is the deal with the optional group picture?
A: This is an optional extra. There is a big group picture that is professionally done at some point in the tour. Everyone is in the picture weather they want to or not, then they can purchase the picture. It is a good souviner.

Q: What are the optionals like on the New Zealand trips?
A: They are similar to Europe, but have some unique things. There are dinner optionals, ghost walks, bungee jumping, skydiving, swings, rafting types, zorbing, lord of the rings tours and many more. Read through all the optionals and see what you want to do, they are all worth it.


Q: What are some of the glacier optionals in New zealand that are available?
A: There are three types of optionals that you can do when visiting a glacier in New zealand. Number 1 is to have a helicopter ride around the glacier and come back, number 2 is to ride the helicopter, fly around and land on the glacier, walk around for a bit, then come back. Number 3 is to be driven to the base of the glacier and to walk up it for a bit before returning.

Q: What is the climb the glacier in New zealand like?
A: First of all, you meet up, get equipment sorted out, get a safety briefing and then hop in a van to be transported to the start of the walk. From the start, you walk about 20 – 30 minutes to the base of the glacier and then you begin walking up the glacier. There is plenty of time to take pictures and play around. The guides tell you where you can go and give you histoy of the area. After time on the glacier, you head back down and walk back to the van, to be taken back to the shop.

Q: What is the Dunedin brewery tour optional like in New zealand?
A: You visit the speights brewery. It is basically a walk around the brewery itself with a guide. The guide tells you about the brewing process and the history of the company. Later there is time for some free samples. It is a fun optional.
Q: When doing optionals in Canada, how do you pay for them?
A: If you are doing some contiki optionals in Canada, they will be listed in Canadian dollars. As for paying for them, your tour manager may request the payment in USD at the end of the tour and include the canadian optionals in that payment. If you are leaving the tour in Canada, no problem, just pay in canadian dollars.

Q: How are optionals paid for in Eastern europe?
A: Just like with the rest of Europe, you pay with euros. Even if the optionals for that country are in a different currency. It just makes things easier.

Q: What is the ballooning optional in Albuquerque like?
A: This is an interesting and fun optional. You have to be up early to this one however. The company running the ballooning picks you up from the hotel at about 6-6.30am, drives you to the ballooning launching site. From here they inflate the balloons and they go up. You then get about 1hr – 90 minutes in the air seeing the great scenery and watching the traffic build up on the roads. You then land. The company car picks you and the balloon up and drives you back to the hotel. Here you get champagne and a muffin as breakfast and a certificate to say that you did it. After this you have to get your bags from the room and head back on the coach.

Q: Is doing the city walking tours in Ireland worth it?
A: In Ireland you have 2 optional city walking tours – the londonderry and the kilkenny one. Both are very good and you learn lots. You also get to see lots as well. In Londonderry this is really your only chance to see the city. In Kilkenny, you get some history of the place as well.

Q: Is the Guinness brewery worth the tour?
A: This is a self guided tour. You learn about the brewing process, the history and what makes it special. There is a chance to learn how to pour your own perfect pint. At the very top is a good viewing point to view the city. It may be expensive, but it is fun to do and worth it as a great experience. Do it by your self or as a contiki optional.

Q: Is the boston trolly optional worth it?
A: It is an interesting optional. It is also just a hop on hop off bus. However you need more time to enjoy it. In reality when you are with contiki, you do Harvard in the morning and then get to the city at lunch. It is a long loop and you may be only able to go around once, if you make one get off stop. Save your money and use general public transport.

Q: Where in Europe does Contiki or topdeck offer a helicopter ride as an optional?
A: Topdeck offers helicopter rides in the swiss alps – some good views here. Contiki does not really offer Helicopters as an optional but will let you know where you can go up in one. Is is worth going up – yes.

Q: Does contiki offer helicopter ride optionals in the USA and Canada?
A: There are a number of chances to go up in a helicopter. The grand canyon, new york and Niagra falls. You can also do a tour from Vegas to the Grand canyon. They are expensive, but are worth it for the great views.

Q: Contiki may or may not offer an optional to the Volcano of Santorini, but how do you do it youself?
A: It is easy to do even if you are with a contiki tour and they are not doing it yet you want to go and do it. Head to the cable car and ride it down the cliffs. You can do a donkey. At the bottom there are all these tour operators, find one you like and book a tour. You will find the ship, get on and head out to the volcano. The walk to the top is easy, just follow the people. Later they may go to the hot springs around the island. It is an easy thing to do.

Q: In new york are the contiki optionals worth it?
A: Contiki offeres a number of optionals for tose finishing the tour in the city. Bus tour and walking tours usually. There are only a few to choose from. If you are staying in the city a short time, go and purchase one. If you are spending more time in the city, get the new york pass and use that, you will see more.


Q: What happens on a visit to an amish farm outside Cleveland?
A: For contiki, this is also done as an optional. It is basically a tour around a farm, you see some animals and a bit on the way of life. You can then ask questions to the guides about their lifestyle. They are happy to answer any questions and allow you to take pictures of the farm, just not any people. There is also a gift shop.

Q: What happens on the booze cruise optional in Miami?
A: This is done as an optional in which everyone does. You are bussed to where the boat leaves from. There is a professional photographer on board as well. The cruise may last up to 2 hours and in that time you have free drinks, plus a tip each drink. However the drinks are all spirits and it is free pour. If you survive the cruise you will then head onto a club afterwards. It is also a fun messy night.


Q: What is the eye spy optional in Berlin like?
A: This is an interesting optional. You usually do it on the night before leaving Berlin. You meet up after dinner with a local guide. You then do a bit of a driving/ walking tour and see some more sights of the city. You make a stop at the Berlin wall memorial – this is different to the east side gallery. The local guide gives you some information and then you split up into two groups to complete a challenge. You then get dropped off and head to a bar close by. Here you complete a few challenges and then move onto finding the next bar. The next bar is close by and could be the silberfish bar. You stay here for a bit and then move onto the club. Usually it is the Matrix. Therefore you need to take a tram to the area and walk to the Matrix. As you are with the local guide, you should be able to get in for free. It is a fun way to spend the night and get to know people, so do the optional.

Q: What are the Optionals in Toronto Like?
A: There are a few optionals available. Going up the CN tower – just getting a ticket at a group price and skipping the lines. The brewery tour – fun and a chance to try some of the local beer. The yellow school bus pub crawl – a chance to see some of the cities bars and clubs and be driven around in a yellow school bus, fun and a must do. The other one is the dinner and comedy club – both fun and entertaining. Just a must do.

Q: Is going to do the Dallas cowboy stadium optional worth it?
A: Depends on what you like doing will determine if it is for you. In most cases it is just a bit of fun and you get to see something interesting. In this case the stadium is huge, it was very expensive to build and you can see where all the money went. You get to tour around the stadium, take pictures and even kick a ball on the grounds. You see the locker rooms and the cheerleader rooms. There is also time to purchase stuff from the shop.

Q: What is the James bond island optional like in Phuket?
A: This involves getting onto a bus and travelling for about 45 mins to reach a boat. Here you hop on the water and begin exploring. Your boat goes into a cave and you have time to explore it, you stop and do a canoe ride in a certain area, seeing the formations, you make a stop at James bond island, seeing the markets and the scenes that were in the movie. For lunch you stop at a floating village and have an included lunch and get time to wander around and shop. After lunch there is another beach stop before heading back to the busses and back to the hotel. If it is raining the trip is the same as if it were sunny.

Q: In Phuket, what is the cultural optional?
A: The cultural optional is going to a lady boy caberate. This is a very good show and a must to see. It is worth the money to see it.

Q: On Phi phi island, what is the beach optional?
A: The beach optional is a boat trip that eventualy goes to the island that the movie the beach was filmed. You first meet up at the hotel, head to the boat and the boat first take you to monkey island. Here you take pictures of the monkeys, then head to another island – big sandy island. There are also two stops where you can go swimming and snorkling. There is also the stop by the beach island, time here to wander around and take a few pictures. You get back to the main wharf about 12 – 1pm. It is good as there are plenty of opportunities for pictures and just relaxing.


Q: What is the Las vegas secret contiki optional.
A: The las Vegas secret optional is for two 'random' tour mates to me chosen to get married at an elvis chapel. Everyone pays a small amount of money, the ceremony happens and then you go onto the old town Vegas or start your clubbing.

Q: In Rome, there is a pasta making optional, what is this like?
A: The pasta making optional is fun. You learn to make 3 types of pasta, you actually make it, rolling the pasta, putting in the filling and then you get to eat it. The restaurant it is at also provides a first course, desert, wine and the pasta. It is a fun and interesting optional.


Q: In Mykonos, what is the paradise beach optional like?
A: For the price of the optional, you get driven down to paradise beach at about 2pm, you get tables for the group and bar service. Once here you can drink, dance, swim and have fun. At around 9pm you get a lift back to the hotel. It is a fun afternoon and can get messy.

Q: In Budapest what is the Parliament tour optional like?
A: This is done on the morning of the full day in budapest. You take a tram from the hotel to the parliament and then you begin your tour. You see various rooms, halls and the rooms where the various houses sit. There is lots of gold to see. There is also history told on the tour and eventually you end up in a museum. The whole thing takes about 1hr and is worth it.


Q: What is the maroi village optional like in rotorura New zealand?
A: This is a tour of the village, so you see houses, grave yard, hot pools and gardens. You also learn about the culture of these people and how they still practice it. It is an interesting experience and worth a visit.

Q: In New Zealand, what are the bay of island optionals like?
A: There are a number of optionals, they go from 3 hrs to the full day. There is fishing, nature hikes, sand surfing, general sightseeing, horseback riding and a few others. It is up to you to decide what you want to do.

Q: In Krabi, Thailand, what are some optionals on offer with contiki?
A: There are no real optionals in contiki, there is a complete free day, with a tour desk at the hotel that you can book elephant tours or tiger temple trips. However contiki does not offer anything and you have to book it yourself.


Q: In Vienna what is the Vienna woods optional dinner like?
A: The location is in the middle of nowhere. The food is good, there is good beer and then there is the entertainment. Music, dancing and joking. It is a fun night.


Q: In Amsterdam, when doing the paddle boat optionals, where do they end?
A: They end near the Anne frank museum, so you can finish there and head over to join the line at the museum.

Q: In Athens, is the food at the dinner optional any good?
A: As this is a contiki optional, the food is good. Fresh greek food, with some live music and dancing. It is a good way to end or begin a tour. There is also plenty of food so you won't go hungry.

Q: In Rotorua, what is the Maori optional like?
A: This optional is a walking tour of a nearby Maori village. It covers the location, culture and history of the people. You get to see houses, hot pools, cemetery and shops. It is informative and worth while visiting.

Q: In Waitomo, what is the black water rafting optional like?
A: It is just like regular rafting, except that you are on an inner tube and you are going through a cave in a river. It is fun, it is exciting, it is exhausting.

Q: In the bay of islands in New Zealand, what are some of the optionals available?
A: There is exploring the cape, fishing, various sailing optionals including dolphins and the hole in the rock. Horse riding, parasailing and kayaks. There is something for everyone.


Q: In Vienna what is the concert and dinner optional like?
A: The dinner is very good, a number of courses, great food and wine. The concert is in a big concert hall in the winter palace, the music is great and there is an intermission as well. It is well worth doing and fun.

Q: In Budapest what is the danube cruise optional?
A: You board a river boat, you get seated at tables and a buffet is offered with wine bottles at each table. You then cruise up the river and back down, passing all the monuments that are lit up. There is time to take pictures

Q: In Budapest, what is the parliament tour optional like?
A: You have a guide – usually the same guide as the last night. They will take you to all the public areas of the building, explain things allow pictures and tell the history. You walk through the building and end up in the gift shop where the tour ends.

Q: At mt rushmore, where is the group picture done?
A: The picture is done in front of the monument itself, as soon as you get there.

Q: At Jackson hole, there is a horse riding optional, does this still happen in colder weather?
A: The horse ride optional is changed in colder weather. The optional becomes a horse and buggy ride with cook out.

Q: At Jackson hole, there is white water rafting optional, how far from the hotel is this?
A: The shop is a 10 minute drive from the hotel, where you get all your stuff etc. However the actual site is 30 minutes from the shop, in nature.
